Chain-Smoking Chimp Who's So Addicted He Has Two Cigarettes On The Go At Once

As our closest living relatives, chimpanzees are expected to have a lot in common with humans. However, this unfortunate chimp has picked up one of our worst human habits. The chain-smoking chimp was caught red-handed indulging his weakness for cigarettes at a zoo in Ürümqi, western China.

He artfully blows smoke over his shoulder after what looks like a stressful day at the zoo.

The chimp looks rather furtive, checking around the sides of his cage to see if his keepers might catch him at it. With his grey hair he looks like a sophisticated older smoker, nimble with his hands and deftly able to light one cigarette from another.

The chimp is actually not the first primate who cannot resist a cheeky cigarette.

World-famous Charlie who lived at Bloemfontein Zoo in South Africa, survived ten years longer than the average captive chimp despite his bad habit. His keepers said that he first started smoking after visitors began throwing lit cigarettes into his enclosure, which is perhaps how this chimp started too.

In February last year, a Russian chimpanzee was reportedly sent to rehab after pestering visitors for alcohol and cigarettes.

Some chimpanzees are all too human.
