Lil Wayne Releases Official Statement on Flag Desecration

After Lil Wayne took to Twitter to deny that he desecrated the American flag during his video shoot for ‘God Bless Amerika,’ he further addressed the issue on his Facebook page.

The controversy erupted when a video surfaced of Weezy performing ‘God Bless Amerika’ behind the flag, which was then dropped to the ground to reveal people from his hometown of Hollygrove, New Orleans. As Wayne continued to perform, the flag was still on the ground under his feet as he danced around.
TMZ claims he was “trampling it” but Tunechi denies he was stomping on the flag. We must note that according to the United States Flag Code, the flag should never touch the ground.

While the code is a federal law, there is no legal penalty for failure to comply.

So since the flag did touch the ground and Wayne is seen gingerly walking on it, thousands of men and women in the armed forces have an issue with Wayne.
On his Facebook page Wayne wrote:

'It was never my intention to desecrate the flag of the United States of America. I was shooting a video for a song off my album entitled “God Bless Amerika”. The clip that surfaced on the Internet was a camera trick clip that revealed that behind the American Flag was the Hoods of America. In the final edit of the video you will see the flag fall to reveal what is behind it but will never see it on the ground. In most people eyes including my own who were raised in that environment, the Hood is the only America they know and the only America I knew growing up. I was fortunate from my God giving talents to escape the Hood and see the other beautiful places this country has to offer but most people who are born in that environment don’t get that chance. That’s their view of their America. That was Dwayne M Carter from Hollygrove New Orleans view of America. That’s who I’m speaking for in this song.'
Despite Wayne’s explanation, thousands of military servicemen felt that his letter is too little, too late. One Army reservist commented:
“No matter your intentions, you desecrated the flag of the United States of America. As a combat veteran and a (former) fan, I can see your intention, coming from nothing and making something of yourself, but the moment that flag touched the ground you lost any and all respect. Whether you meant it to be seen or not. The definition of integrity is doing the right thing, no matter whether or not someone can see it. We’ve all made mistakes, but this is a monumental f— up and I pray that “your god” lays you in the bed you’ve made.”
