Brit Tourist Stabbed To Death On Birthday In Malia

Tragic teenager Tyrell Matthews-Burton was celebrating his 19th birthday in Malia when he was pinned down and brutally knifed to death (including once through his heart) in an "execution style" killing, it was revealed today.

Tyrell Matthews-Burton died after a drunken brawl in the party resort of Malia on Greek island Crete early yesterday. Police arrested a group of 15 British nationals, including one 19-year-old prime suspect.
Coroner Manolis Michalodimitrakis said of the killing: “There were two stab wounds, to the back and to the chest. “He was clearly pinned down and killed execution style — there were no defence wounds. The knife punctured his lung and heart. He lost almost half of his blood.

Witnesses to the brawl described the group as “clearly intoxicated”. The coroner added: “The smell of alcohol was very strong. The entire mortuary smelt of it.

Last night Tyrell’s mum Sharon was too upset to speak, but flowers had been laid outside the family home in London.

Karel Francis, 24, a pal from the local area, said: “He must have been in the wrong place at the wrong time. I’d never have expected that.

Another friend who did not want to be named said he knew Tyrell since childhood, adding: “He was the man of the house, working and looking after his mum. He was a good kid.

BBC Radio 1Xtra DJ Tim Westwood, who performed in Malia on Monday, tweeted about the death yesterday, calling Tyrell by what is thought to be his nickname, Sterling.

He wrote: “Saddest nite in Malia. RIP Sterling — deepest sympathies to the family and friends.

More pals also tweeted tributes. Michael Roberts said: “No one could say that Tyrell wasn’t loved, liked by everyone from all walks of life #RIP.

Police officer Maria Mackraki told The Sun yesterday: “The suspect is a 19-year-old Briton and was arrested in Malia. He is being detained until he appears before a public prosecutor later.

The teenager’s body is due to be flown home to Britain later this week.
