Celebrations On The Streets Of Boston After Bomb Suspect's Arrest

Boston bomb suspect's capture sparked street celebrations last night as the 22-hour long manhunt ended in a dramatic climax.

Jubilant residents poured out of their homes waving American flags to celebrate the news that Chechen immigrant Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, had been captured. 

They finally emerged onto the streets after a city-wide lock-down shut all public transport and left the streets disconcertingly empty. Marathon bomber suspect Tsarnaev was arrested following a shoot-out with cops after a resident found him hiding in a boat in a backyard the Boston suburb of Watertown.

Police wrote on Twitter: "CAPTURED!!! The hunt is over. The search is done. The terror is over. And justice has won. Suspect in custody."

In Boston's Dorchester suburb – the neighborhood of eight-year-old Martin Richard killed in Monday's horror bombing – people set off fireworks to celebrate.

Hundreds of people marched down Commonwealth Avenue in the city centre, chanting "USA" and singing Sweet Caroline - the anthem of local baseball team the Red Sox – as they headed toward Boston Common.

Police blocked traffic along part of the street to allow for the impromptu parade.

But others celebrated in a more subdued manner, as a small crowd gathered in complete silence near the site of the twin marathon blasts.

Boston University student Aaron Wengertsman, 19 – wrapped in an American flag – said: "I'm glad they caught him alive. "I thought people might be more excited, but it's humbling to see all these people paying their respects."
