Jose Mourinho, no doubt, still holds hope he can make it a Special Three. Portugal's
most provocative export has lifted the Champions League with Porto and
Inter Milan, and winning a third title with Real Madrid would see him
record a unique managerial feat.
No one before has tasted success in European football’s grandest competition with a trio of different clubs. A 4-1 reverse in Dortmund in last
week’s semi-final first leg makes that possibility seem all the more
remote. But it would be foolish to think Mourinho, the expert
psychologist and motivator, has given up on staging a remarkable
comeback and progressing to next month’s final at Wembley.
Tonight
he and his players have the opportunity to replicate exactly what their
predecessors in white managed 38 years ago against Dave Mackay’s Derby
County. A 4-1 loss in the first leg of the last-16 was wiped out by a
5-1 victory in the Bernabeu.
Mourinho is fully aware that such a
turnaround is unlikely but should it happen the momentum will be with
his team on May 25. Given that potential match would probably be his
last in charge of Madrid he will know the chance of succeeding in this
personal challenge might never be as great.
