Yesterday’s 1-0 win at Newcastle sealed a top-four spot ahead of Spurs. The Gunners qualified for the Champions League for the 16th consecutive season
thanks to Laurent Koscielny’s 52nd-minute strike at St James’ Park.
Arsenal boss Wenger said: “Everyone
ruled us out but we showed character and attitude to come back.
When Arsenal lost 2-1 at White Hart Lane in March, they were a massive seven
points behind their rivals.
But yesterday’s win left them a point clear of Tottenham and boss Wenger paid
tribute to a staggering run of results at the business end of the season.
“We got 73 points and that’s three better than last season.
Arsenal took 26 points from the last 30 available. No other club in the
Premier League has come anywhere near that level of consistency in that
time.
And Wenger said: “Since our defeat at Tottenham, our form has been the best in
the league. So I am proud of the character, spirit and all we had to deal
with.
“It’s a good base for the long-term, to go into next season on such a strong
run.
“Consistency is the most difficult thing in our sport and we knew we had to be
resilient. “We were this season up against very strong Tottenham and Everton teams, so it
was really special to come back and get in front of them.”
Wenger added: “A lot of people thought we wouldn’t make the Champions League
and we’ve shown them up. I’m proud of everyone in our dressing room.”
Walcott admitted: “It was so tense. Newcastle showed they shouldn’t be where
they are in the league. “They were fantastic. We had to dig deep. “We didn’t know the Tottenham score. They did their job. “We knew it was in our hands and had to do our job. I’d like to say it is a
shame but it’s not.”
And despite Gareth Bale’s brilliant late winner for Tottenham against
Sunderland, Wenger’s men held their nerve to pip their North London rivals
to fourth.
