Music Veteran 'Fatai Rolling Dollar' Is DEAD

Nigerian highlife veteran musician, Pa Fatai Olayiwola Olagunju, 85, popularly known as Fatai Rolling Dollar has passed on. The octogenarian passed on this morning at Ahmadiyya Hospital in Abule Egba, Lagos, Nigeria.

He was rushed to the hospital by his wife about  a week ago. One of his wives, Funmulayo Olagunju, confirmed his death. The deceased came back from America some weeks ago where he had gone for shows for about three weeks.

He was born on 22 July, 1926, in Ede, Osun State. He is survived by wives and many children.

Rolling Dollar started playing music in the 1940s, first using a thumb piano, before moving onto the guitar, and joining highlife bands in Lagos in the hey-day of the 1950s and 1960s.

Although many of the old highlife greats are no longer alive, the music is still popular, and as many including Rolling Dollar believe, its influence on Nigerian music over the decades means it will never die.
