Etisalat Nigeria yesterday said Afiz
Oyetoro, popularly known as Saka and a former brand
ambassador of its network, made a mistake by featuring in a Mobile
Number Portability (MNP) advert with its rival, MTN Nigeria.
Chief Executive Officer of Etisalat
Nigeria, Mr. Steve Evans speaking at a media parley in Lagos on its
position about the MNP initiative said the company was ready to have
Saka back on its side at anytime.
He said, “Saka made a terrible
mistake, we believe he is on a break and we are ready to welcome him
back at anytime if he wants to come back.”
Evans who described the MNP as a good
initiative by the telecoms industry regulator, Nigerian Communications
Commission (NCC), to drive healthy competition in the sector stated that
Etisalat deliberately took time to ensure hitch free porting process.
He said the scheme is a credible and important ingredient of a
competitive market adding “MNP is not meant for every subscriber because
more than 50 per cent of Nigerian telecoms consumers have one or more
SIM cards”.
The MNP works for only those customers
who have had their telephone lines for very long time and wish to
retain such numbers for good quality network.
He said, “for those who have had their
numbers for long time, it gives them the opportunity to choose a better
network without losing their original number.”
