Tragedy struck on Sunday evening as some students of the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos, were involved in a fatal motor accident, which left no fewer than three dead.
The students, who were said to be returning from the birthday of a friend’s mother, crashed their car near Muritala Muhammad International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.
The students, who reportedly died included a 400-level student of Mass Communication Department, Eniola Abiodun, and a 200-level student of Quantity Surveying, Adelowotan Oluwafunmilayo, viewed as a first class material because she was on grade point 4.71. Another student, identified simply as Kanyinsola, also died, while Temi and Iyabo, who were said to be in critical conditions, had been taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.
Efforts to reach the University of Lagos authorities to comment on the incident, however was abortive as calls to the telephones of the registrar and that of the Public Relations Officer did not go through. However, a lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication, Dr. Olubunmi Ajibade, said she had heard of Abiodun’s death in an interview with our correspondent.
She said, “It’s very sad. I heard about her demise this afternoon myself.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, also confirmed the accident. She however said only four students were in the vehicle.
She said, “It was a lone fatal accident which occurred along the Airport Road. We don’t know exactly what caused the accident, but I can confirm to you that only the car crashed. “There were four occupants and only one died on the spot. The remaining three were rushed to LUTH.”"
