21-Year-Old Man Recovers From Coma Speaking Fluent Chinese

A university student who cheated death in a horror car crash woke up from a coma speaking fluent Chinese.

Ben McMahon suffered serious head injuries in the accident near his home in Melbourne, Australia last year. When he came around from a week-long coma his first words to a nurse were in Mandarin.

Ben, 21, explained: "Most of it's hazy, but when I woke up seeing a Chinese nurse, I thought I was in China. "It was like a dream. It was surreal - it was like my brain was in one place but my body in another. "I just started speaking Chinese - they were the first words that left my mouth."

Ben studied Mandarin at school, but had never managed to master the language. Since the crash he has turned his new found skills into two new careers - as a tour guide and a budding TV star.

Ben runs Chinese language tours around his native Melbourne.

And he's one of three hosts of a TV variety show for Chinese expats called Au My Ga (Oh My God).

He says of the show: "The show aims to promote and advance the understanding between Australia and China," Mr McMahon said. "I think that is the key - it signifies a big step towards creating stronger ties, while providing a local perspective."
