Former governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva yesterday regained
temporary freedom from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission
(EFCC).
The embattled former governor who was arrested by EFCC operatives in
his mansion at Maitama in Abuja on Wednesday after a long battle with
the anti-graft agency was granted an administrative bail at about 5pm
on thursday.
According to Head of Media of EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren in a chat with Daily Sun,
Sylva will be required to report to the Commission whenever the need
arises. “He has been granted bail. We expect him to report to EFCC
whenever there was need for him to respond to certain issues,” Wilson
stated.
EFCC had, however, kept silent over the raging controversy as to when
Sylva was likely to be arraigned in the court to answer to the series of
corruption charges slammed against him by the Commission. “I can’t tell
you when we are going to arraign him,” Wilson stated.
“As soon as we conclude arrangement on when to arraign him, we will
inform the public. AlI can say right now is that Sylva has been granted
an administrative bail and he’s no longer in our custody.”
EFCC has neither confirmed nor denied whether Sylva’s international
passport was seized. A source however confided in Daily Sun that Sylva’s
passport was with the anti-graft agency. According to the source,
Sylva’s passport was confiscated in order to avoid chances of running
away from the country.
