Drake was one of the big winners at the 2013 BET Awards. However, he was nowhere in sight to accept his trophies. Rumor suggested that the 26-year-old decided to cancel his appearance at the event since he was afraid of running into rival, Chris Brown.
In a statement, Drake dismissed the rumor and explained the real reason why he couldn't make it to the event, which was held at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre on Sunday night, June 30.
"The BET Awards are always a good time and I'm sorry I could not be there to celebrate," he apologized. "I'm in Toronto due to a family matter but I have a lot of gratitude for BET and the fans," he continued.
The rapper, who won three trophies at the awards show, then thanked fans for voting for him, saying, "Getting 12 nominations and winning three awards just makes me want to work that much harder."
Drake is currently working on the follow-up to 2011's "Take Care". Drake promised the album entitled "Nothing Was the Same" would arrive later this year. "I'll be in the studio finishing Nothing Was the Same -I look forward to bringing it to the fans on Would You Like a Tour in September," he added.
Prior to releasing the statement, Drake already took to Twitter to thank fans and apologize for missing the event.
