An assistant pastor (names withheld) with one of the pentecostal churches in Abeokuta, Ogun State was among 12 armed robbery suspects arrested by men of the Ogun State police command in two separate raids at the weekend.

The cleric was arrested yesterday while leading a gang of three armed robbers. Others were picked up at Idologbo village, near Igbesa in Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area of the state with dangerous arms.

According to the state Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Muyiwa Adejobi a team of the State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), led by Fola Ogunkoya launched an attack on the suspects at their hide out.

The SARS team arrested eight of the suspects and recovered items which included one pump action rifle, two double barrel guns, one locally made pistol as well as some ammunition.

Daily Sun gathered that the cleric who is currently being detained at the Ibara Police Station had allegedly robbed a house in Abeokuta metropolis along with his gang. Hundreds of members of the church who expressed shock at the arrest besieged the police station.  Police source said the case of the cleric would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigations today.

Adejobi further stated that the state Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye had said the command would not stop raiding black spots in the state.

Okoye appealed to members of the public to always relate and collaborate with the police by sharing useful and relevant information with its intelligence unit.
